How do you get out of ADHD paralysis?
Break the freeze physically before you try to break it mentally: stand up and move for 60 seconds, drink water, then do the smallest visible piece of the task on a 2-minute timer. Movement first works because paralysis is a nervous-system state, not a planning failure.
Step 1: move before you think
Stand up, walk to another room, shake out your hands. Sixty seconds is enough. You are not motivating yourself — you are changing the nervous-system state that is holding the freeze in place. Trying to think your way out while sitting still almost never works.
Step 2: shrink until it's laughable
Cut the task down until the next step feels too small to refuse: not 'do the dishes' but 'put one glass in the sink'. If the shrunken step still feels heavy, shrink it again. There is no such thing as too small.
Step 3: 2-minute timer, then stop
Set a timer for two minutes and give yourself explicit permission to stop when it goes off. Most people keep going, but the permission is what makes starting possible. Stopping on time when you want to is also a win — it teaches your brain that starting is safe.

What if I can't even stand up?+
Start smaller: wiggle your toes, then sit up, then stand. The sequence matters more than the size.
Does caffeine help?+
Sometimes briefly, but on an empty stomach it often raises anxiety and deepens the freeze.
Should I switch tasks instead?+
Switching to another demanding task usually re-freezes. Switch to movement, not to a different decision.
