ADHD answer

Is ADHD paralysis just laziness?

Short answer

No. Laziness is not caring; ADHD paralysis is caring intensely and being physically unable to move. The distinction is diagnosable — imaging shows the prefrontal cortex under-firing during paralysis episodes. Calling it laziness is like calling a stalled engine 'lazy'.

The neurological difference

In lazy behaviour, no attempt is made — the person isn't trying. In ADHD paralysis, the intention is present but the motor output fails. Brain imaging shows measurably reduced prefrontal activation during ADHD paralysis episodes.

Why the label matters

'Lazy' produces shame, which raises stress, which deepens paralysis. 'Paralysed' produces problem-solving, which produces exit routes. The label changes outcomes.

What actually resembles laziness

Very little — most 'lazy' behaviour is untreated ADHD, depression, burnout, autistic burnout, or unmet needs. True laziness (fully capable, chooses not to) is rare.

Try 'my starting engine is broken, not my desire to drive'. It lands better than technical terms.

Yes — self-labelling as lazy demonstrably worsens ADHD outcomes.

What if I'm actually being lazy sometimes?+

Everyone chooses rest sometimes — that's not laziness either. Both labels are usually wrong.
