Why essays freeze people specifically
An essay is not one task, it's twenty — choose an angle, find sources, structure, draft, cite, edit. The brain sees the whole undifferentiated mass and can't find an entry point, so it does nothing at all.
The entry point that works
Skip planning. Open a blank document and write the worst possible first paragraph on purpose, in ten minutes, with no research. A bad draft converts the essay from an abstract mass into an object you can edit — and editing is dramatically easier than starting.
Manufacture the deadline earlier
If panic is what finally starts you, create the panic sooner: promise a friend a draft by Thursday, book a library slot, or hand a section to a study partner. Artificial deadlines work because they're social, not because they're real.
