ADHD answer

Is ADHD paralysis a sign of burnout?

Short answer

It can be. Occasional paralysis is normal with ADHD. Paralysis that lasts days, covers tasks you used to enjoy, and comes with exhaustion, cynicism and dread is a burnout pattern — and it doesn't respond to productivity tricks. It responds to reduced load and recovery.

Everyday paralysis

Task-specific, minutes to hours, breaks with movement or a tiny step, and you still feel relief once you're moving. This is the ordinary version, and circuit-breakers work on it.

Burnout paralysis

Spreads across everything, including things you normally like. Lasts days or weeks, comes with flat mood, physical exhaustion and dread of ordinary messages. Tiny steps don't hold, because the deficit is recovery, not activation.

What actually helps

Reduce inputs before you optimise output: cut commitments, protect sleep, and drop the standards on everything that isn't essential for a couple of weeks. If it persists, or mood is low most of the day, get clinical support — burnout and depression overlap heavily here.

Can you be burnt out and still function at work?+

Yes — many people hold work together and collapse on everything at home. That pattern is still burnout.

Does a holiday fix it?+

It helps, but if the load is unchanged the paralysis usually returns within weeks.

Is autistic burnout different?+

It overlaps but adds sensory intolerance and loss of skills; the recovery need is even more about reduced demand.
