ADHD answer

Does body doubling help with cleaning?

Short answer

Yes — it's one of the most reliable ADHD cleaning interventions there is. Having another person present, even silently on a video call, supplies the external structure and mild accountability your executive system isn't generating. It works whether or not they help.

Why presence works

A second person creates a low-level, non-judgemental sense of being observed, which supplies the structure and mild urgency your own executive system isn't producing. It's not about pressure — the effect appears even when the other person is doing something completely unrelated.

They don't need to help

The double can be reading, working or scrolling. Asking someone to help usually adds coordination and negotiation, which costs more executive resource than it saves. Presence, not assistance, is the active ingredient.

How to set one up

Call a friend and clean while you chat. Join a virtual co-working room. Ask a housemate to sit in the same room. Fifteen minutes with a set start time is enough — the schedule matters more than the length.

Yes — it's equally effective for admin, studying and email.
