ADHD answer

How do you clean a room that's been messy for months?

Short answer

Don't clean the room — do one category pass and stop. Bin bag first, nothing else. Then dishes. Then clothes. A months-old mess is too large to hold in working memory, so the only workable approach is repeated small single-rule passes over several days.

Start with rubbish only

One bin bag, one rule: only things that are definitely rubbish. Nothing gets sorted, moved or decided. This pass usually takes ten minutes and transforms how the room looks, which is precisely why it comes first.

Then dishes, then clothes, then paper

Each pass gets its own session, and each has exactly one rule. Single-rule passes need almost no decisions, which is what makes them possible when a general 'tidy up' isn't. Expect the room to be genuinely usable after four passes.

Handle the shame first, not last

A long-standing mess generates shame, shame raises stress, and stress deepens the freeze — which is the actual mechanism keeping the room the way it is. The mess is evidence of a hard period, not of your character. Starting is easier once that's settled.

One box, decisions deferred. Never let a sentimental item stop a rubbish pass.

Is professional help reasonable?+

Absolutely — a cleaner or professional organiser for the initial reset is a legitimate accommodation.
