ADHD answer

Why do I hyperfocus on the wrong things with ADHD?

Short answer

Hyperfocus locks onto whatever produces the strongest dopamine signal, not whatever's important. A video game or Wikipedia rabbit hole reliably delivers dopamine; the tax return doesn't. The ADHD brain chases the signal, not the priority. This is the core paradox of ADHD attention.

Attention follows dopamine, not priority

The neurotypical brain can partially override interest with importance. The ADHD brain can't — attention follows the strongest reward signal, full stop.

Why boring important tasks lose every time

Reward signals from 'important but dull' tasks are weak and delayed. Reward from 'immediate and stimulating' is strong and instant. The comparison isn't fair — it's not even close.

How to redirect hyperfocus

Make the important task stimulating (novelty, deadline pressure, body double, music) or make the distracting task boring (block sites, greyscale phone). You can't fight the signal — you have to change it.

Sometimes — but only when it lands on the right thing. Most of the time it doesn't.

Can I train it?+

Partially — you can build environments that make important tasks likelier to catch it.

Why can't I stop when I need to?+

Same reason you can't start — task-switching cost is enormous for the ADHD brain.
